The Dawn of Voice Controlled Home Security

The Dawn of Voice Controlled Home Security

In the past, voice control technology was seen as science fiction. We can all list at least one movie from the top of our head where the protagonist was chatting with an artificial intelligence powered robot, ordering it to make changes in the space station. In recent years technology managed to catch up with these wild fantasies, and we are only steps away from this kind of future (minus the space travel, for now). Even better, virtual assistants are now part of smart home security systems, allowing homeowners to arm/disarm their system hand-free, only by issuing common voice commands. The same applies to home automation solutions: you can set the lights, or turn up the heat through the intelligent thermostat. As for the future, we can expect to use the assistant to create waypoints for the car’s navigation system, have the fridge order missing ingredients on its own, and display recipes on the oven with just a single word.

Alexa, Siri, Cortana and Google Assistant

Even though the market of virtual assistance is barely a few years old, it’s already cornered up by some of the largest tech giants in the world. The current leader of the race is Amazon’s Alexa. Despite their relatively humble start selling speakers with the voice assistant as a mere bonus, Alexa is now the most recognizable voice control service, loved by the casual consumer base. This is proven by the fact that people usually ask Alexa’s help to set the timer, read the news, play some music, create a shopping list or schedule the lightings. However, they cannot lie back, as Google plans to dethrone them with their own virtual assistance. Even though they aren’t that popular at the moment, Google can count on their massive Android userbase to test the service, not to mention the huge potential of the technology for their search engine.

Microsoft decided not to stand between these two giants when it comes fisticuffs, thus they aim at a different market with their own assistant. According to Microsoft, Cortana is meant to cater to businessmen and professionals. The company is known to invest heavily in artificial intelligence research, so we can expect some well implemented features. They also utilize their partnership with Nissan and Volkswagen, meaning that in the future these cars will be sold with Cortana on board. Last but not least, we have Siri, the darling of Apple. Despite being an early bird, Apple’s lack of aggressive moves set back the natural growth of its system. Still, there is hope for Siri, since Apple also has a huge fanbase, with billions of iOS devices in their hands.

Voice controlled home security systems

Voice control still has its baby teeth, proven by the fact that consumers are using them for mundane tasks (setting a timer, playing music, checking the news etc.). But it won’t take long before homeowners recognize the potential of the limitless skills offered by Alexa, Cortana or Siri. The Consumer Electronics Show of 2017 proved that companies are ready to implement the technology to the home security sector. Amazon teamed up with ADT so their base station can be controlled through voice commands, while Apple announced their partnership with Honeywell, basically offering the same. We predict that at the end of this decade, every major home security system will support voice control.
